Several days into the journey, a car races up behind the caravan, scaring the horse so badly that the horse dumps the caravan into the ditch. Toad’s newest hobby is traveling in a caravan-and he expects Mole and Rat to go with him on his first adventure. Toad has a reputation for picking up expensive hobbies and then moving onto something new when the hobby proves too difficult. One day, he asks Rat to take him to meet Toad, who’s wealthy and conceited. Over the next few months, Mole learns a lot about boating and river life. Rat good-naturedly puts the boat back together, takes Mole back home with him, and invites him to stay for a while. When Rat refuses to let Mole row, Mole snatches the oars and promptly capsizes the boat. On the way back after the picnic, he becomes jealous-he wants to row. But by placing those bodies in the sanitized labs of Jenkins Farms, Guillory kept the plant-based gore to a minimum. Dismembered body parts naturally creep people out, and Farmhand has tons of them. 1 had plenty of grisly visuals on display, the book largely kept its tone light as new readers warmed up to the Jenkins clan. With Farmhand Vol 2, Guillory tips the scales of the series firmly towards the horror end of the spectrum. With Jed Jenkins’ grip on his farm slipping, Zeke sets out to save the family farm. In other parts of town, people talk about the strange plants and animals popping up over night, each more bizarre than the last. Droves of organ transplant patients keep showing up in Freetown, each transplant is drawn to the town by a voice only they can hear. Lately, things have gotten weird, even by Freetown standards. But things are never normal in Freetown, especially when your dad runs the most advanced Biotech company in the world, growing human organs from plants. ![]() A nice, quiet life in the country near the old family was supposed to be normal. I liked the premise, the pairing and the settings… but I was never invested in the story or Ms. Guillory introduces two appealing principals, the story is predictable and flat, and her characters spend too much time in their own heads and physically separated (he lives in Los Angeles, she lives in Berkeley) – doubting and second-guessing their relationship the whole way through.
